My name is Husnul Khotimah. I studied in IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon since 2007 to 2011 at English Education Department (PBI) of Tarbiyah faculty. The title of this journal was my motto in my thesis and (insya Allah) in my real life. It could give me an additional motivation when I had to face some barriers during conducting my research.
It worked. When I had to revise my thesis for more than three times, wait for a signature in two weeks, wait for my supervisors to get their guidance for more than a month, beg the samples’ time for recording their voices for more than a month, and delay my research for about a month; it could give me more spirit to finish my thesis as soon as possible. Remembering it could remind me that God is in what His believers’ thought. Thus, I had to be spirit and positive thinking in everything that God had given to me during my research. I believed that everything will be passed easily when we are always spirit and positive thinking.
My
thesis that I had been conducted was untitled “The Comparative Study of The
Sundanese Students’ Dialect in Pronouncing Some of English Phonemes (/p/, /f/,
and /v/) Between The Sundanese Students of First Year and Third Year at English
Education Department of IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon”. This thesis talked about
the Sundanese dialect that shown by the Sundanese students during their English
pronunciation, especially in some of English phonemes (/p/, /f/, and /v/). I
conducted this title because I do interest in my Sundanese friends’
pronunciation. Theirs was different with my teacher had taught to me when I was
a High School student. I had observed their development of their pronunciation
since first semester until eighth semester. The result was their pronunciation
was tent to be same as their first semester although they had already studied
how to pronounce English pronunciation correctly. Thus, some questions rose in
my head “Would it happen to the junior classes?” “Why could it happen?” “Was
there comparison between the first year and third year Sundanese students in
pronouncing some of those English phonemes?”
By
the end of September, I had finished my research and prepared it as my thesis
in the next month. The result was: null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted. The Ho
said that there was no significant comparison in pronouncing some of the
English phonemes between the first and the third year Sundanese students. It
was out of my alternative hypothesis. However, after I studied their background
(first and third year students), I understood that there were some factors that
influenced their ability in pronouncing English phonemes, such as their English
education background, English high school teacher, tendency in enjoying English
literature, and phonology study.
And
Alhamdulillah, by Allah’s blessing, my family’s praying, my supervisors’
guiding, and my friends’ supporting; I could finished conducting my research in
time. On November 24th 2011, I could defend my thesis in front of
the examiners and be considered as a candidate of graduator of this Institute,
IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon. Then, on February 25th 2012, I will
graduate with an unpredictable IPK (3.55). Now, for spending my rest time
(waiting for my graduation day), I am being asked by a lecturer to be a
Musyrifah (Guide in learning English to the freshman students, 2nd
semester) at Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Syekh Nurjati since January to April 2012.
May it be written as my charity by Him. aamiin yaa Rabbal ‘aalamiin…
That
was my experience with my motto. Although there were a lot of barriers during
my research, Allah allowed me to finish it in unpredictable result. Hence,
always be spirit and positive thinking of everything that you face because
(believe in me) everything will be passed easily by God’s blessing. Insya Allah.
